HIGH SCHOOL TECHNICAL OCCUPATION
DIFFERENTIATED CAPS LEVEL 4 - LEVEL 5
AGES 14 - 18
At our Carlum House Vocational campuses we aim to provide individualised quality education and vocational learning for children between 14 -19 years old who are not able to access mainstream education because of the nature of their neurodiversity, learning differences, social and emotional needs or challenging behaviours.

The Technical Occupation (TO) certificate is a specialised qualification designed to cater to the needs of learners with learning barriers within special needs schools in South Africa. This certification aims to equip these learners with essential skills and knowledge that enable them to pursue meaningful opportunities and lead independent, fulfilling lives. The primary goal of the TO certificate is to bridge the gap between education, independence and supported employment programs for learners. By providing a tailored curriculum that emphasises practical skills, the TO certificate ensures that learners are equipped with a skill-set that align with their abilities and interests.
HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCES

The TO certificate curriculum is designed with a strong focus on practical, hands-on learning experiences. It encompasses a range of subjects and activities that are relevant to the vocational and occupational fields with the aim of providing opportunities within supported employment programs. Key components of the curriculum include:

Job Skills Development:
Learners are supported in building practical skills that help them take part in real job tasks, based on their abilities and interests. These skills are introduced in a hands-on and guided way to help learners feel confident and capable.

Participation Skills:
With help from staff and peers, learners practice important workplace behaviors such as communicating clearly, working with others, following directions, solving problems with support, and staying safe on the job.

Daily Living and Life Skills:
Courses focus on everyday skills that help learners be as independent as possible. These include managing simple money tasks, understanding personal care routines, using a schedule or timer, and making safe, healthy choices with assistance when needed.
